Born out of a period of major internal shift at Koei Tecmo, the first proper remaster of an entry in the main Dynasty Warriors series has landed on current-generation platforms. Until now, Omega Force’s PS2-era saga had only ever received expanded or revised re-releases of individual entries. DYNASTY WARRIORS 3: Complete Edition Remastered, however, marks the franchise’s first genuine remake of a classic title.
Picking the third installment shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. While Dynasty Warriors 2 (originally released in Japan as the series’ first entry) laid the groundwork for the “musou” genre, it wasn’t until its successor that Koei truly gave substance to the core concept. The “1 vs. 1000” formula, hastily put together to line up with the PS2’s massive launch in Japan, really came into its own in Dynasty Warriors 3. This new release naturally includes all the extra content previously added in the standalone Xtreme Legends expansion released later.
One could argue that the fourth or fifth games deserved a modernization treatment more, bringing them up to modern standards. Yet, given the strong critical and commercial reception of Dynasty Warriors Origins, remastering the third entry feels like a win on two fronts: on one hand, it serves as a great entry point for revisiting the series’ roots, celebrating what is effectively the progenitor of the series; on the other, it delivers exactly what nostalgic fans have been asking for—a response to years of complaints about recent numbered entries being overly simplified and focused purely on flashy spectacle.
